Personal Web Pages

Personal Web Space is a feature of your Mediacom Online Internet service that allows you to have 10MB of Web space at no additional cost. Your Web pages can share personal interests, professional information, community concerns and other knowledge. So become an active participant in the World Wide Web today and get your personal web site started.

When you click to sign up you will be asked to type in your user name and password. Enter your user name (the part of your e-mail address which appears before the @ symbol) using lower case letters ONLY. Then enter your password. Your password is case-sensitive, so you need to enter it exactly as you do to access your e-mail (If you have forgotten your password please contact customer support). After entering your username and password, Click OK and proceed with the sign up process.

Publishing
Our home page server is compatible with Internet Explorer 5.0’s built in graphical FTP helper, and the Netscape Communicator publish feature. You may also use your choice of any number of FTP software programs that are available on the Internet or for purchase at retail outlets. More information on publishing to your Personal Web Space can be found in our frequently asked question section.

File Manager
Use the file manager for quick access to your web site files, folders and to help you track your disk space quota.

The File Manager shows you all the files and folders in your website. You will be able to see the file names, when you last updated the file, and the size to help you track your 10MB space quota. If you click on a file, you will be able to preview it in the browser frame (click the BACK button to return to the list). If you click on the folder, the list will change to show the files in that folder. You can also sort the files by selecting either File Name, Last Modified, or Size to sort the files by name, date, or size.
To open the File Manager: Click on the File Manager link, then in the username field type in your e-mail account username. In the password field, type in your e-mail account password. Click OK to continue.

To Delete Files
Click on the "Check for Deletion" box beside the file and click the "delete selected items" button. A confirmation dialog will appear asking if you are sure you want to delete the item(s). Click OK, and the listing will refresh, providing a confirmation message at the top of the listing indicating which files were deleted. To select all files for deletion, click on the "SELECT ALL" button. To unselect all files checked for deletion, click on the "clear all" button. To delete directories you will need to use an FTP client.

To Create Multiple Directories and Folders
If your Web site contains many files, you may want to divide up your Web site by adding directories. You can create new directories in your Personal Pages folder by using an FTP program.

Remember if you change the directory structure of your site, you probably have to make changes to links to other files and images on your Web page!

To Determine Current Personal Web Space Usage
Disk Space Allocation: 10 megabytes (MB) total
Monthly Bandwidth Allocation (Web traffic): 250 MB per month

To determine the size of one of your documents
In the File Manager, look in the "Size" column corresponding to the file.

To determine your total disk space
To determine the disk space all your files are using, look at the amount beside "Quota Used." This line will also indicate what percentage of your allotted disk quota your files have consumed.

If your files are about to exceed your disk storage space
You must free up some disk space by removing or deleting some files from your Personal Web Space. If the total of all your Web documents exceed the allotted quota, we will notify you through e-mail within a short period of time after we detect your Web space is over quota. Prior to being notified, you can reduce the size of your files. Graphics and multimedia files usually consume large amounts of disk space. One quick way to free up some disk space is to reduce the amount of detail in your graphics or shorten the length of video and animation files.

About your monthly bandwidth usage
Bandwidth usage represents the amount of traffic to your Web site, i.e. the number of times people access or "hit" your page. Mediacom Online provides 250MB of traffic, which should be more than adequate for most people's personal Web page. If for some reason you are attracting an unusually large amount of Web traffic, your account may be suspended for the rest of the current month.
