How Do I Clear the Cache, Cookies and History from My Mac?

The Internet uses cache, cookies and history files to store specific information about a Web page on your computer's hard drive. These files enable the browser to find the same pages more quickly when you access them later.

CACHE FILE: A cache file stores Web page information for quick retrieval later; a cached page is accessed more easily than the original page; frequent updates by the browser ensure you are getting the most recent version.

To clear the cache files:
1. Press the key combination COMMAND + F to bring up the Sherlock tool
2. In the white bar, type: cache
3. Hit ENTER
4. The computer will list all the cache files located on the hard drive
5. Click each cache listing that has an "f" until your user name appears in the bottom window
6. Click the cache f folder under your name
7. Click FILE at the top of the screen
8. Click MOVE TO TRASH

COOKIES FILE: A cookies file stores your preferences for viewing a particular Web page. AT&T Broadband Cable Internet Service does not track usage through cookies; however, it does store information about your system that you may have entered in the Customer Service page.

To clear the cookies files in Netscape:
1. Press the key combination COMMAND + F to bring up the Sherlock tool
2. In the white bar, type: magiccookie
3. Hit ENTER
4. The Found Items list displays
5. Click on each MagicCookie listing until yours displays in the lower box
6. Click on the file and drag it to the trash

To clear the cookies files in Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click EDIT and select PREFERENCES
3. From the left menu, double-click on Receiving Files
4. Click COOKIES
5. A cookies list appears in the right section of the window
6. Highlight the cookies you wish to remove and click DELETE
7. Click OK

HISTORY FILE: A history file stores a running list of the Web sites you have visited in a given time period.
To clear history files:

1. Press the COMMAND + F keys to bring up the Sherlock tool
2. In the white bar type: history
3. Hit ENTER
4. The Found Items list displays
5. Click on each Netscape History file until yours displays in the lower box
6. Delete the file by clicking and dragging it to the trash.
