How Do I Configure My Computer Settings with DHCP for Windows 9x?

Before you begin configuring your computer for DHCP please unplug your cable modem power cord and disconnect the cable that goes from your modem to your computer.

To configure your computer settings with DHCP for Windows 9.x operating systems:



  1. Close all applications

  2. Click the START button in the lower left corner of your screen

  3. Select SETTINGS and click CONTROL PANEL

  4. Double-click the Network icon

  5. Click the Configuration tab

  6. Scroll through the list and locate the TCP/IP protocol specific to your Broadband Cable Internet Service

  7. Ethernet Network Interface Card

  8. Highlight the protocol

  9. Click the PROPERTIES button below the window

  10. A new window opens with multiple tabs

  11. Click the IP ADDRESS tab

  12. Locate and verify that the button labeled: OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY is selected

  13. Click the GATEWAY tab
    Make sure there are no addresses (numbers) listed (if there are addresses listed, highlight them and select REMOVE

  14. Click the DNS CONFIGURATION tab

  15. Locate and click the button labeled: DISABLE DNS

  16. Click the WINS CONFIGURATION tab

  17. Locate and click the button labeled: DISABLE WINS RESOLUTION

  18. Click the ADVANCED tab

  19. Verify that the box labeled: SET THIS PROTOCOL TO BE THE DEFAULT PROTOCOL is selected

  20. Click the BINDINGS tab

  21. Verify that CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS is CHECKED

  22. Click OK

  23. Click OK

  24. Restart your computer

After you have configured your computer for DHCP restart your computer and reconnect the cable that goes from your cable modem to the computer and reconnect the power cord to the cable modem.
