How Do I Configure My Computer Settings with DHCP for My Mac (OS 8.5 and higher)?

Mediacom Support

Before you begin configuring your computer for DHCP, please unplug your cable modem power cord and disconnect the cable that goes from your modem to your computer.

To configure computer settings for DHCP for a Mac 8.5 and above:

Note: The procedure involves removing the TCP/IP preferences folder. If you wish to keep a copy of your old TCP/IP preferences, you should copy them to another folder other than the Preferences folder or to a disk.

STEP 1 - Acquire a new/clean copy of the TCP/IP Preferences folder.
To achieve a new preferences folder, you will need to:

Close all windows
Click on the MACINTOSH HARD DRIVE
Browse to the SYSTEM FOLDER and then to PREFERENCES
Find the TCP/IP PREFERENCES and drag them to the trash
Close all windows
Note: When the TCP/IP settings are opened again, a new preferences folder is automatically created.

STEP 2 - Configure new TCP/IP settings.
Note: While performing this configuration, some fields will be intentionally left blank. Blank fields may be unfamiliar; however, this is quite normal on the new Mediacom Online Network.

Click on the APPLE MENU and then click CONTROL PANEL and TCP/IP
Under Connect via: - Select Ethernet or Built-in Ethernet (depending on the OS)
Under Configure: - Select USING DHCP SERVER
Leave EVERYTHING ELSE blank. This includes:
DHCP Client ID
Search domains:
Any other available fields
The rest of the fields will populate themselves with:
Close the TCP/IP settings window
If prompted to save the new settings, click SAVE
Open the browser and attempt to visit various Web sites
Note: Most systems (at least OS 8.0 and above) DO NOT require restarting the computer.

User mode can be basic or advanced. The only difference is that the Advanced mode will have more fields that will be unpopulated once connectivity is acquired.

To configure computer settings for DHCP on Mac 0S 10 and above:

Click on the Apple Menu
Click SYSTEM PREFERENCES
Select the Network icon
In the Network window location field is set to Automatic
The Show field should be set to Built-in Ethernet
If Built-in Ethernet is not in the field, see next set of directions below
The Configure field should be set to Using DHCP (Do not use DHCP with fixed IP address)
The DHCP Client ID field should be blank
Everything else should be blank
Close the window
If you do not see Built-in Ethernet in the show field:

Select Active Network Ports from the show field
Select Built-in Ethernet
Click Apply Now
If Built-in Ethernet is not in the window, select New
A dropdown menu will appear
From the drop down list, select Built-in Ethernet
Click OK
